4th Vampibots Annual List: Top 10 Posters of 2012

Poster adalah satu bentuk promosi yang selalu saya tunggu-tunggu dalam rilisnya sebuah film. As someone who's interested so much in art, mengecek poster film bagi saya adalah sebuah 'hiburan wajib' tersendiri. Poster memang tidak semerta-merta bentuk penilaian bahwa suatu film itu bagus atau jelek. Ada poster yang bagus tapi filmnya jelek, atau sebaliknya. Don't judge a book by its cover, don't judge a film by its poster. But judging poster by the pictures instead? Lets do it!

Berbeda dengan penilaian film yang perlu waktu untuk mendalami unsur-unsur di dalamnya, menilai poster itu lebih 'gampang'. Tapi karena itu juga yang membuat memilih hanya 10 poster dari ratusan poster itu menjadi sangat sulit, banyak poster-poster yang tak kalah menarik harus saya sisihkan. My Honorable Mentions are: Silver Lining's Playbook (for its playfulness), V/H/S (for brilliant use of its title), John Carter (for that image alone, too bad it's not really the official poster), Ted (for its tagline, the funniest of the year), Sound of My Voice (for its mysterious vibe) and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (for artistic and well-placed flowers lol). Dan karena saya memutuskan untuk menilai poster dari film-film yang rilis tahun 2012, beberapa poster untuk film 2013 yang sudah keluar harus saya diskualifikasi juga, misalnya Stoker, Man of Steel atau The Wolverine.

So here they are, my top 10 posters of 2012....

THIS IS 40

Salah satu poster dengan gambar terunik bagi saya. Ekspresi dan aktifitas yang mereka lakukan ini menyimbolkan married couple yang keliatannya memang lagi midlife crisis. Yes, iPad is the new newspaper.

Love the color, love the drawing, love the title treatment. I would love to hang this on the wall, please.

THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY

The handdrawn Bilbo Baggins is surely gorgeous. Tapi pemakaian elvish pada judulnya yang menrik perhatian saya.

THE CABIN IN THE WOODS

Unique, complex and intriguing. Benar-benar menggambarkan filmnya sendiri. Well, you think you know the story? Go watch it.

KILLING THEM SOFTLY

Kalau bukan karena posisi no. 5, film ini mungkin yang memiliki best ensemble of posters of the year. Me love some minimalist poster. Especially if it's cool like this.

THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS

Probably the most stylish collection of poster last year. Dan dari sekian banyak saya paling suka yang ini. Saya belum pernah menonton filmnya, but these posters are to die for.

THE MASTER

One of the most unusual posters last year. Apa maksud gambar ini? Apa hubungannya dengan filmnya? Bagi saya poster film ini misterius, in a good way. Membuat saya semakin penasaran dengan film Paul Thomas Anderson ini.

MOONRISE KINGDOM

As expected from a Wes Anderson's film. Warna warni terang yang ditunjukkan lewat sebuah hand painted background serta handwritten font cerah benar-benar menyimbolkan aura playful dan quirky film ini.

ZERO DARK THIRTY

Bagi yang tidak tahu premis filmnya, mereka akan mengatakan poster ini tidak ada maksudnya. Lazy and uninspired. Tapi kalau tau poster film ini adalah tentang penangkapan Osama bin Laden, or they call it 'the greatest manhunt in history', this poster turns to genius and, well, effortless.

LES MISERABLES

This poster might not be original. Sama seperti filmnya, poster ini sepertinya adalah bentuk adaptasi dari pertunjukkan teaternya ke dalam bentuk promosi sebuah feature film. This is predictable and inevitable move. Tapi somehow, they pulled it off. Poster pertunjukkan Les Miserables dengan muka Cosette cilik yang sudah melegenda (the image first appeared in 1862!) itu diubah dengan muka sang pemeran, Isabelle Allen, dengan fotografi yang cantik. Call it a remake, a homage, an upgrade. One thing's for sure, this poster is strikingly beautiful.
